Understanding Fixed Shifts, Rotation and Worker Exceptions

In this document, we will help you understand fixed shifts, rotation and worker exceptions in Attendico, including worker-specific scheduling rules and overrides. Workers can follow their group’s automatic rotation or remain on one selected shift. The worker’s Current Shift is interpreted differently depending on whether the group rotates, uses manual planning or stays fixed.

What is this feature used for?

These options exist because not every employee in a rotating group has to follow the same cycle. For example, one employee can be excluded from rotation while coworkers continue rotating.

Before you begin

  • Create the group and its shifts.
  • Open an existing worker or the Add Worker form.
  • Know whether the group has automatic rotation, manual planning or neither.

Options and fields explained

Current Shift in a rotating group
The worker’s starting position in the cycle.
Current Shift in a nonrotating group
The worker’s regular shift.
Current Shift in a manual group
Used automatically when Always Keep This Shift is enabled; otherwise assignments are made date by date.
Always Keep This Shift
The worker-level exception that keeps the selected shift instead of group rotation.

Step-by-step procedure

  1. Open Workers and the employee profile.
  2. Review the selected Group.
  3. Choose Current Shift from the shifts belonging to that group.
  4. For a rotating group, leave Always Keep This Shift off if the employee should follow rotation.
  5. Enable Always Keep This Shift if the employee must work that same shift instead.
  6. For a manually planned group, leave it off when you intend to assign days individually in Planner.
  7. Click Save and open Planner.
  8. Check several dates to confirm the expected scheduling behaviour.

What happens after saving?

Fixed-shift workers remain associated with the chosen shift rather than moving through the group’s rotation sequence.

Important notes and common mistakes

  • Changing the Group may invalidate a previously selected shift. Confirm Current Shift again after changing groups.
  • A worker-level exception is not the same as disabling rotation for the entire group.
